Many years ago, when I was a resident, I was told that to be a successful surgeon, I needed to remember the three As: be affable, available and possess the ability to care for the patient. I would add one more quality… I am accountable to the patient for the care I give, and the trust that is placed in me. I am a well-trained community general surgeon. Embodied by that statement are the principals of a broad-based training in the spectrum of surgical problems and 26 years of surgical practice. As a community general surgeon, I treat a wide variety of common conditions and perform a variety of common operations as well as being available for urgent problems as they arise.
