Dr. Karen McFarlane went to the City College of New York in New York City and enrolled in their Scholar’s program where she did biochemistry research including research for the human genome project at University North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She went on to University of Iowa for medical school where she took interest in general surgery and plastic surgery. She completed her general surgery residency training at St John’s Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan. At her program, she became the chief surgical resident and won best teaching awards. Her interests include hernias, bariatric surgery, anti-reflux operations including colorectal surgery. She is one of few general surgeons in Michigan who has completed over 1000 robotic cases.
