Dr. Joseph C. Carmichael is a board-certified UCI Health colorectal surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical approaches to treating diseases of the colon and rectum. Carmichael started the first robot-assisted rectal surgery program in the state of Missouri and went on to perform the first robot-assisted rectal cancer resection in Orange County after joining UC Irvine Medical Center. His clinical and research interests include the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of recurrent or advanced colon and rectal cancer, complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and anorectal disease.
